What does the Social Car Scheme provide?
The Social Car Scheme is a volunteer transport service. We aim to match up transport requests with volunteer availability. Because our drivers are volunteers we may not always be able to meet your needs, however we will always do our best to help you with your journey.

The Social Car Scheme can enable people to:

• Attend medical appointments
• Visit a relative or friend
• Attend social activities
• Go shopping

Who can use the service?
Anyone who lives in South Derbyshire and is unable to use any other form of transport.

When does it run?
Enquiries and bookings can be made Monday - Friday Mornings (9:00am - 12:00pm) although transport is available seven days a week subject to the availability of drivers.

Where does it operate?
Many trips are around the local area although longer journeys can be arranged.

How much will it cost?
The scheme is non-profit making although there is a charge made to the client of 40p per mile which is paid to the driver to cover their expenses.

Handy Van Network and Safer Homes - South Derbyshire

The Handy Van is available to anyone over the age of 60 and can provide Fire Safety and Security checks, install equipment such as Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors and provide Energy Efficiency advice. It can also help with practical tasks such as changing light bulbs, hanging curtains and securing carpets. This scheme can also provide and fit Key Safes, which can be crucial in allowing an individual to continue living in their own home.

The Safer Homes scheme is designed to improve safety and security in the homes of older (over 60) and vulnerable residents by installing door or window locks and other security equipment. We can also offer crime prevention advice.

Both of the schemes are open to residents of South Derbyshire and are free of charge. Clients can refer themselves, or can be referred by a relative or a health professional. I have enclosed a leaflet for each scheme.

Has been running for 3 years and is for young people aged between 14 and 19 (sometimes older) who might need some support with things that are making them unhappy, concerned, confused or upset. 

The following are some of the problems encountered:

• Bullying
• Confidence & Self Esteem
• Money & Debt
• Sexual Health
• Exams/School/College
• Relationships
• Parents
• Self-Harm
• Sexuality
• Eating Problems

They work with many different agencies like Connexions, youth workers, nurses, relationship counsellors, health trainers, drug and alcohol workers etc.

The centre has a chill out zone, 1-2-1 youth worker sessions, free internet, Nintendo Wii, pool table, table football, info leaflets, weekly youth club every Thursday evening.  All facilities are free.
